Unlocking the Volume on Rogers Cable Box Remote Control

(Let's see you find a non-copyrighted picture of the Rogers Cable box that doesn't have a cat on it!!!)

If you just picked up a Rogers Cable Set-Top-Box, installed it on your TV, and now you're trying to control the volume with the provided Remote Control, you may notice that every time you press Volume + or Volume -, the TV light on the Remote Control goes on, and the volume doesn't change.

This is happening because the "Global Volume Control" on your Rogers Remote Control has been locked by default to one device, your TV. And since your TV code has not been programmed into the Remote Control, it is doing nothing.

Now, one would think that having the Rogers Set-Top-Box Remote Control on default control the volume of the...Rogers Set-Top-Box, but hey, who am I to question the all-powerful and all-controlling Rogers Cable... Oh Rogers, I dare not mock thee...

Anyway, after some searching (when having to deal with this issue myself today), I was able to find the steps required in order to fix this issue. I've included those steps here below for your reference:

How to Enable Volume Control for the Rogers Set-Top-Box

1. On the remote control, press and hold SETUP until the last-selected device key blinks twice, then release SETUP.
2. Enter 9 - 9 - 3. The last-selected device key will blink twice.
3. Press "Cable". The selected device key will blink twice.
4. Now, when you press VOL +, VOL -, or MUTE, the volume of the selected device (Cable) can be controlled regardless of mode.

That's it! If you were having this problem, I hope this helped you out!

Now, just in case you wanted some further info about your Rogers Remote Control, I've taken the liberty of finding the Official Rogers site where all of that vital information is located. Here it is: How do I use the Remote Control?

Lastly, in case you have any other questions about your Rogers Personal TV, I've included the links to their FAQs (SOURCE: Rogers.com - Using Personal TV - FAQ) below for your reference.

Thank you so much for this, I work nights so I wear headphones on my days off when I watch tv since I don't want to wake anyone else in the house, but many shows I could barely hear thanks to Rogers not wanting me to change the set top volume.

Your instructions worked like a charm and now I can finally hear what I'm watching.

Thank you! Holy cow what a pain in the ass!

Wow, thank you very much. This has had to be the most difficult hurdle to overcome in the history of universal remotes, heck, the online technician didn't know how to help..
I appreciate you being so clear and concise.

Sincerely, Grateful surfer :)

Thanks! It did work but volume still isn't loud enough. I have to increase the volume with my tv remote first to get the Rogers remote to work better but then get lots of static from my tv. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem.

This works! Thank you so much!

I was getting very frustrated following the instructions that Rogers had given without getting any results.

Thanks! but now i have the problem that I can't adjust my tv volume with my remote :/ is there anyway to make it so the cable button makes it control the cable box volume and the tv button makes it control the tv volume?

I HAVE THE POWAAAAAAHH!

Thank you for this. Yes, three years later this technique still works like a charm.
Yesterday I switched out my Rogers HD PVR for a new one (since the last one was having bizarre errors), and the new remote had this problem.
It's SO STRANGE that this isn't mentioned in the remote manual or in the Rogers "Get Started" book.

Frustrating. But thanks for posting!

This worked with my last box, but not with the PVR box I just got. If I can't fix this I will return the entire thing and cancel my Rogers. Even the tech woman I got today told me I had to use TWO remotes to use the volume. I cannot get this thing to control the volume unless I use the TV volume with it's ugly blue and yellow box. This is a major flaw with Rogers.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I hate how the remotes are on this mode by default. I lost my manual I I was too lazy to look it up online, so this was perfect. Thanks again! =)

Thank you so much, I spent 1 hr trying to figure it out and even called Rogers who couldn't assist me! Thanks again!

Anonymous thank you so much so easy I had this problem for almost a year.

Thank you, this is amazingly simple. I can't figure out why Rogers would do such a thing, but many custom options have been disabled on Rogers/Yahoo, also.
I need to be able to control my own TV and computer.

Jesus! Since Christmas we've been unable to control the volume on our Rogers remote. I've tried numerous other "fixes" after searching online, both from the Rogers site and other forums. THIS ONE FINALLY WORKED. A -MAZING, Thanks!

Hi - while this did indeed work, unfortunately it complicated my situation even more so. Do you have the steps to undo this linkage? Greatly appreciated!
